Alejandro Duran, my new favorite artist…

Washed Up is an ongoing project by Mexican-born, New York-based artist Alejandro Durán that addresses the issue of plastic pollution making its way across the ocean and onto the shores of Sian Ka’an, Mexico’s largest federally-protected reserve. With more than twenty pre-Colombian archaeological sites, this UNESCO World Heritage site is also home to a vast array of flora and fauna and the world’s second largest coastal barrier reef. Unfortunately, Sian Ka’an is also a repository for the world’s trash, which is carried there by ocean currents from every corner of the globe.
Starting in February 2010 and over subsequent visits, Durán has used this international detritus to create his color-based, site-specific sculptures. He conflates the hand of man and nature, distributing the objects the way the waves would, like wind-scattered seed or roots tunneling through soil, echoing the organic forms of the surrounding landscape. In order to photograph the sculptures, Durán uses a mix of natural and artificial light, further blurring the line between existing and constructed realities.
Over the course of this project, Durán has identified products washed ashore from forty-two nations on six continents. The resulting photo series depicts a new form of colonization by consumerism, where even undeveloped land is not safe from the far-reaching impact of our disposable culture. Although inspired by the works of Andy Goldsworthy and Robert Smithson, Washed Up speaks to the environmental concerns of our time and its vast quantity of discarded materials. Beyond turning trash into treasure, the alchemy of Washed Up lies in the project’s potential to raise awareness and change our relationship to consumption and waste.

Thank you Alejandro for your great project! Spotted on Design Mom. Teresa

Really, REALLY?

California schoolchildren will be able to read all about plastic bags' contribution to society in their school text books. Who's to thank for such a development? Why, the American Chemistry Council, of course.
The lobbying group put pressure on California educators to include positive information on plastic bags -- such as that they take less energy to produce than paper bags and are much lighter -- at the same time it was fighting San Francisco's ban on plastic bags, according to California Watch.
The section "The Advantages of Plastic Shopping Bags" was added in 2009 to high school juniors' text. The information is "almost verbatim" identical to letters written by the chemistry council, which lobbies for bags as well as other plastics.
Gone unmentioned are the facts that plastic bags take 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill while leaching toxic chemicals into groundwater and oceans, which are, in case nobody noticed, currently full of plastics.
Read the rest of the article HERE.
*************************************************
I really wish time and energy could be used for the good of the planet, don't you? Thank you to Harmony's sister-in-law Wendy for the heads up on this one. If you live in California and your kid comes home with this book, ask the school to choose a different curriculum. Teresa

Whirlwind to California…

I made it back from a 3 day trip to California. I flew out on Wednesday and came back last night. Whew. The first thing I did was meet the ever fabulous Judith Selby and give her 60 bags for an event with her alma mater, Pitzer College, that she and Richard are hosting at their Electric Works Gallery. Judith is wearing one of her famous beach plastic necklaces in this photo…
Enjoy the bags everyone at the Pitzer event!
Then I headed to Gulalala to see Harmony and judge the Art in the Redwoods Exhibition for 2 days. My fellow judge was Tim McNeil from UC Davis, he was great. We got along well which made the task of picking winners from 350+ entries much easier! This is a photo of the awards ceremony. Tim has a lovely British accent so I let him do most of the talking.
I had a wonderful, if not busy time, here are good buy jazz hands with Harmony
Driving my rental car back over the Golden Gate Bridge (sigh)…
Good bye California, I heart you!
 Window seat!
First flight back went ok, but late, so I had to run to my gate in Dallas only to find out that the plane was down due to a mechanical. New plane, push off go to runway, some other mechanical, back to gate, get it fixed, finally in the air. Land in Nashville 2 hours late but happy to be home and safe. Hope you had a good weekend! Teresa

It's too hot…

My kids have not been outside as much as I would like lately. It. Is. Hot. Here. Some days when you walk out the door the heat hits your lungs like a ton of bricks. Like walking into a sauna. Ugh. Yesterday was not too bad. After Little Girl and Little Man kept arguing in the morning, I sent them outside. I didn't care about the temp, they needed to go…

Rocks, plants, sticks, a squirt bottle and some toy horses. It's good to be outside. They are outside right now playing with them again. My heart is happy. Teresa

In my email…

From my office manager, I don't know the original author, just funny! Teresa

The Green Thing

In the line at the store, the cashier told an older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment.

The woman apologized to him and explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day."

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today.  Your generation did not care enough to save our environment."

He was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over.  So they really were recycled.

But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks.

But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw-away kind.  We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry the clothes.  Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that old lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of  Montana .

In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us.

When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power.  We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water.

We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But we didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service.

We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances.  And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

Please forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smartmouth young person.

Nice…

Her blog is HERE. Have a great weekend, Teresa

First Day of School…

Every year when the first day of school rolls around, I walk down memory lane. I LOVED the beginning of school. All the new supplies, the excitement about seeing what teacher you had and what friends were in your class. Fun!
