Aunt Frances Bags…

My Aunt Frances (aka Vice Mom) strikes again. She makes the best bags. Really. She can take a hand full of scraps that I would normally put in the pet bed stuffing pile and come out with something gorgeous. These are 2 bags she has sent me lately…

They are both from fabric sample strips from THIS wonderful company. We usually make handles out of the strips but Aunt Frances took the time to sew them together to make beautiful and unique bags.
I really love the angle of the patchwork, yummy!
Thank you for the bags Aunt Frances, you are the best! Teresa

From Bed to Bag…

Remember our camping trip a couple of weeks ago? Well, we discovered one of our air mattresses was leaking like a sieve. Sheesh! We could not find the hole/holes to patch and it seemed like an awful lot of plastic to send to the landfill. I started looking at it and told my husband I thought it could be bags, he agreed.

Here is the before…
I cut the whole thing apart and the sides became handles. Next, I trimmed the plastic connectors off that were part of the interior…
And made seven bags (one didn't make the photo)…
They are great! Very sturdy and waterproof. Perfect for the beach, pool or frozen foods at the grocery store. So there you go, anything that can be a bag around this house, becomes a bag! I think the kids have started hiding their clothes from me… Teresa

Gino Rizzi

Gino Rizzi uses all kinds of domestic plastic that most people don't consider as valuable materials. He started recycling and looking for costless materials, when starting his artistic carreer in Paris after finishing his art studies in Urbino, Italy. He engaged children and their parents in this act of recycling, organising art workshops. This while working for a cultural centre and as an art teacher in public schools.

These experiences made him develop a whole new vision on plastic, which appeared an omnipresent sculptling material and also feed for discussion on very contemporary themes. His work, inspired in great extend by nature's beauty, expresses in a poetic way his concern about our planet or in his own words 'the plastification of nature'.

An email from Ukraine…

Dear Green Bag Lady team,

A few days ago I got acquainted with your project. It happened occasionally. I was driving home with my friends. The weather was quite dull. We stopped at the local supermarket. After having bought a few necessary things we were returning home. After we have returned I parked my car near the road.
Later that day I was going to park it in the garage and noticed that a used and dirty plastic bag was blown by the wind to the front glass of my car. It just stopped there. After having looked around I noticed another one by the house of our neighbors. I took the bag from the window of my car and the one that was lying on the road and went home.
I was quite angry with the fact that so much garbage is just flying in the city and nobody cares. Later that evening one of my friends told me about the times we had at our school. Sometimes we had an Eco-week. On this day all our class went out to clean the environment. The school days are now gone. But my friend told me about your project and I was happy to know that somebody else cares.
Maybe it does not change the world, but it definitely will change the attitude. Thank you for your work and for your project!

PS. I have attached the photos I took that day. If you can send me one of your bags, I will be happy to become a part of your project and show it to my friends.

Dan Phillips, my new favorite guy…

Dan is a designer and builder in Huntsville, Texas. In 1998, he and his wife Marsha started The Phoenix Commotion, a construction company that builds affordable houses from reclaimed and recycled materials. Russia Bags!

Hi, Teresa!

This is Elena from Russia. My daughter and I want to thank you cordially for the bags we have received from you recently (#18870 & #18871).
They are great for shopping. We now completely refuse from plastic bags, we do not need them any more!

My mom immediately fell in love with our bags. She told me that she would love to get one of these. She goes to the market every day and badly needs a nice bag. I was astonished by the fact that she still uses plastic bags. Trying to persuade her to switch to fabric. My mom would be happy to receive one of your super cute bags if you have some.

Thank you very much again for the bags. Now we can make both our motherland and our mother Earth even better and cleaner!

Please find attached the pic of my daughter Arisha going out for shopping. Of course, carrying her and my new fabric bags along.

Remember me to your kind father!

Best wishes from Russia,
Elena

Awesome Facade!

1,000 recycled doors are enough for the South Korean architect Choi Jeong-Hwa to transform a dull ten-story building into a fresh-looking landmark. This ‘skyscraper’ in the center of the Korean capital Seoul has become a pixelated landmark, that tells the story of thousand people who once chose a fitting color for a door in their apartment.

San Francisco

Ok, so wow, I am finally catching my breath. Over a week ago I flew out to the City by the Bay for a photography conference. Great people, great food, some interested lectures and all that. Yup. Then, Harmony came down and met me there, accompanied by Ling-Yen (and here) and her hubby John. First, we went to the DeYoung museum and saw the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit. Crazy stuff. The mannequins talk to you!
I told my hubby I'd make him pants like this. He isn't going for it…
Lunch at DeYoung, me, Harmony and Ling-Yen…
Every day is better with jazz hands, Harmony, me and John…
Walk on the boardwalk, nice…
Hope your week is going well! Teresa
