After School Snacks

Before school started this year, Little Girl and I had a discussion about after school snacks. She expressed an interest in having healthier choices. She has a bit of a sweet tooth and would eat ice cream, cookies and chips if given the option. We came up with the idea that if I made snacks for her she would happily eat them. This has been a fun challenge for me too. I try to make the snacks as visually appealing as I can and usually include a little sweet for her + water…always water.

Here are some I have made so far…

Apple and PB sandwiches (she LOVES these) with mini chocolate chips + gluten free crackers and cheese + water.
Strawberries with chocolate sauce dip + crispy rice (also yummy with bananas). Cucumber spears, GF crackers + hummus. Water.
Watermelon + orange slices. PB + crackers. Water.
Raspberries. Cucumber spears + hummus. Pretzels with cashew butter, mini choc chips + organic gummies (bought at Whole Foods). Water.
Watermelon, oranges, organic tortilla chips + guacamole. Water.
Little Girl has been loving the snacks. She enjoys coming home to see what is set out for her. She is usually my first kid through the door, we say hi and I ask about her day and amount of homework,  then I leave her alone. She is my introvert and needs time to decompress after the crowds at school. What about you? Do you make your kids snacks? Please share ideas, I'd love to hear! Teresa

  1. She's a lucky girl! Her snacks sure look good. That's a great way to encourage healthy eating!

  2. these are wonderful. My mom would do the same for all five of us kids. And of course we were all different. But the snacks would all be healthy and we could choose from a list for the week. It was always fun to see what mom would come up with and how she made it special just for me. I am so glad you recognize your daughter is an introvert and work with her about it. Way back when, lol, my mom seemed to know this also. I was the only introvert of the five. and she knew just how to handle me and guide me. My husband and I recently read two books that are fabulous for introverts. "Quiet-The Power of Introverts in a World That Cant Stop Talking" by Susan Cain (this is general) and "Introvert Power" by Laurie Helgoe (PhD) (this one talks about the science behind being an introvert) they are both very good books that we highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn more about being an introvert. Good luck with your daughter and have fun doing it. Both of our kids are introverts and we were able to help them deal and actually grow in an extrovert world.

  4. Lori--

Thanks for your great comment! How nice that your mom did that for you and your 4 siblings. I did it a lot when my kids were little but now that they have gotten older and more independent, not as much. However, I do think as you get more independent, it is not as easy to make good decisions especially when something not healthy is faster and easier.

I'll have to look into those books! Thanks for recommending them. I'll go see if they have them on Better World Books.

  6. We used to love an apple cut in half with the core scooped out and Tbsp of peanut butter put into the hole. My son also loved yogurt & banana slices mixed together.

  7. Nita--

Those sound yummy too. I think my daughter would like something with yogurt. I always forget about yogurt since I don't like it very much. Thanks for the reminder!
