Actually I have been doing this for years using hand made nets - bonded nylon for the net part, polished nylon for the handle. They last forever, hold more than I can lift and are very decorative.
THE DOWNEASTER’ NET BAG

Originally developed for hauling 30 kg lead blocks over the rugged and trackless terrain of northwest Puerto Rico, the Downeaster’ has become a favorite away down east in Calais and Jonesport, Maine for carrying fish and lobsters, has been adapted to shopping for fresh produce in the suburbs of Naples and the market gardens of southern France, Israel and Holland, makes a great beach bag in the tropics and has even been used as an overnight bag for short trips in Sweden.

100% bonded nylon single strand hand-tied netting of surprisingly large capacity defies rotting under prolonged contact with moisture, is ultraviolet light resistant, is easily washed and quick dried using Woolite, cold water and fresh air. Over-sized polished nylon handles are comfortable and an original design allows them to open wide for easy accommodation of the largest items.

When putting the bag of items in your car trunk, grasp one handle in each hand and wind one handle around the other 4 or 5 times to keep items in the bag from falling out when on bumpy roads or into tight turns.

Thank you so much for the beautiful blue and white bag which just arrived yesterday. I have already proudly taken it to the fruit farm and the grocery store. Your project has done so much good in the world and also made many people happy. You should be very proud! Thanks so much. Wish you lived nearer Massachusetts.

Hi, I saw you on CNN. I was so impressed. I have a daughter, Jannah, she is 7yrs old and always reminds us to recycle because she doesn't want to grow up on a black earth. She wants the earth to stay green forever. Thanks for doing good to the environment and being a good role model. From: seemakara at hotmail dot com

You have such a great idea! Ever since I had sewing class for the first time last year in school, I've really gotten into it. And one of the things I've been making a lot of are tote bags! I love your idea and I might try it too, because you sound very busy! I know how much work it can be!

My friend, and neighbor Ashleigh Everrett, has recieved one of your bags. She recently told me about what you were doing and I thought this was amazing. I saw the bag she got and fell in love. I am huge on eco-friendly products, and I hope to do my senior project on Global Warming. I know you are unable to send bags at this time, but if you ever start sending them again let me know.

love,

I just found your site! I LOVE the idea of not using plastic bags. They break all the time. At least with a fabric bag, they would be wonderful. I hope to use more fabric bags in the future! How do I get signed up to receive a bag from you??? Would love to have one from a fellow Tennessean!!
Thanks!

Green Bag Lady:

I do tie dye and have fabric pieces and shirts left over that can't be sold. Would you be interested in taking these odds and ends off my hands? I have a store in Truth or Consequences, NM and would be more than happy to help you hand out the bags.

I just saw your story on CNN and I would love to have one of your bags so when I take it shopping and people comment on my beautiful bag, I can spread the word on where I received the bag and most importantly, the reason I carry this is because "fabric" is better than plastic..
Thank you.

I saw your segment on CNN and was so impressed by what you are doing for our planet. I never use paper or plastic. I always use the totes you can purchase at Target, Walmart, etc. I saw one you made w/hearts and would love one. I am a heart lover. I would be spo proud to use your bag for shopping. I have 4 kids and am always running from store to store. I tivoed the segment and showed it to my kids. They said I have to contact you and get a bag. Please send me one!!!
Thanksso much!!!

Just saw the CNN piece and think this is a GREAT idea. Being a single man without a sewing machine or not knowing anyone who has one, it sure would be nice to get one.

My "give back" projects are the pediatrics AIDS foundation and the local area food bank, both of which I collect donations for at work.

Good on ya! You rock.

It's wonderful what you have done and continue doing. I feel I'm the original bag lady. My first canvas bag was given to me many years ago, when volunteering for our local cultural center/museum, which promots environmentally sustainable practices. And now they have started a green roof as well. I have several cloth bags & shop with them all the time. If
I'm so lucky as to receive one of your bags, that would please me.
Thank you, blessings to you and yours.
