Meet the Bagettes--Part 3 of 3

This is part 3 of 3 but there might be more!

The first photo is the Bagettes you have met with the addition of Dad Bagette. Dad was visiting for almost a month and helped immensely. He input numbers, ran to the Post Office, cut and ironed on labels, ran the list of toters for cities/totals, etc, etc. What a great Bagette. Missed his calling as: Honestly, I can't think of anything. He has always LOVED his job as an electrical engineer and still works as a contractor.

The next photo is Connie. Connie is fabulous. Connie is full of whit and great with fabric. Missed her calling as: A volunteer team leader. On Saturday, Connie was the first one to offer bags to people and filled up 3 sheets of names. More than any of the rest of us! Teresa

Mom was right.

Well, moms are usually right about a lot of stuff. However, in this instance I am talking about my mother's outlook on "stuff." My mother saved just about everything. An empty peanut butter jar was never such. It was an opportunity waiting to be filled with something. Usually some type of small, set of something, marbles, coins, bears, that her grandchildren loved. Nothing pleased my mother more than pleasing her grandkids.

My mother passed away about 2 1/2 years ago in the spring. My brother, 2 sisters and I did the huge job of divesting the house that summer. Oh, my, what we found. We knew mom was a saver and liked to keep things that might one day have a purpose, what we didn't know was how much of it we would come across in the next few months.

I took on the job of clearing out many closets. In these closets I would find bags, usually Target bags, filled up and tied with a knot. In each was a different set of something. One would contain about 50-60 margarine containers. Another might have 20 baby food jars and yet another would have 10 or so clean, empty ketchup bottles. I should also point out that my mother was a pre-school teacher and would, indeed find uses for much of this. However, she really hadn't taught for about 3 years before she passed away.

My sister had the foresight to call the art teacher at the school down the street. The woman was beside herself with joy over the bags of treasures she acquired at the house. She loved all the clean, ready to use art materials. I know mom was smiling down from heaven during that transaction!

My mother was raised on a farm and taught to adhere to the old adage, "Waste not, want not." This has gotten lost in our society. This post is not to tell you to save every little scrap, but merely to look at what you are throwing away. Could it have another purpose? Does it really need to sit in a landfill for eternity? Could it be used to store marbles instead? Could it be donated or made into something else?

One last thing, at the grocery, pay attention to what you are buying. Is the container recyclable? Glass and metal can be recycled over and over and over. . . try to buy items packaged in them.

Blissful Rain!

I am in Heaven. It has been raining here in Nashville for the past two days and I could not be happier. We have had 2 summers now that were very dry. I love trees, flowers and plants and it breaks my heart to see them drooping from thirst. The first thing my kids say when it is raining is, "Oh, mom, aren't you happy? The trees and the flowers are so happy." They know how I feel. We have never sang "Rain, rain go away. . ." at our house.

Rain also makes me very productive. And, my University has been on Fall Break too so I have had some time to sew. Did you watch the Debate last night? It was here at Belmont University where I teach. Campus has been a crazy, nutty place lately. Back to productive. I sewed almost 100 bags together yesterday along with oodles of handles. My dad is visiting so he helped with the trimming of said handles.

My bagettes and I will pack up more envelopes on Sunday so if you still have not gotten your bag (about 200 of you) have no fear, we are closing in on the finish line!

Sorry this took ages to get to you, but we moved overseas to London and it has taken a couple months to get settled. I thought you'd rather see a photo of one of your bags in someplace more exciting than Frederick, Maryland.

We just had performance artist, Sheryl Oring, here at Belmont University. This is a photo of Sheryl and her husband Dhanraj Emauel with their Green Bag Lady bags. This is Sheryl's site. She travels around the country with a manuel typewriter and invites people to dictate postcards to the future president.

This is part 2 of "Meet the Bagettes."

Lindsey, the newest bagette. I don't know her very well yet, but what I have seen so far is marvelous. Missed her calling as: a kaleidoscope, she loves color as much as I do!
