Notes From a Crazy Person. . .

When I first read about the shirt dresses from Jordan and Blue Print Crafts, I thought they were adorable. She got the tutorial from Dana at Dana Made It. What a great way to upcycle a men's shirt. I wanted to make some for little girl. So, my friend Mollie (she will probably not be my friend anymore for posting the photo below) and I went thrifting. I do not say this lightly. I am the Worlds Worst Thrifter. Really. I get in a place and get completely overwhelmed. Mollie told me I needed a goal. Ok, men's shirts were the goal.
I bought these three. . .
Like Dana suggested, I make a pattern from one of Little Girl's dresses. . .
I wanted more of a cap sleeve than a short sleeve so my pattern is a bit different. . .
Here are the cut out pieces. . .
Finished. . .
Here is where the crazy person comes in. The finished dresses were perfectly cute as is, but it looked like the buttons needed to come off and new, funky ones put on. The first dress (the orange one) I just replaced the buttons with orange and green to match the Amy Butler fabric I chose to go with the shirt. But, when it came to the green dress, I just didn't have any buttons that made me happy, so, what did I do?? Yes, cover 7 buttons with the same fabric.
I do think it turned out sweet though. . .
Little Girl loves it. . .
This is the other one. . .
Maybe the panties should not have been blue (ignore that). . .

She is so sweet to be out there when it is like 55 degrees. What a trooper!
Aaaawwww, I'm so happy it is spring. . .
Certifiably yours--Teresa

How cute! What size men's shirt did you use? What size does it come out to be. I'm not sure I have a little girl small enough to make this idea work, but it is very cute! Love the buttons!!!!

They are adorable. Good choice with the buttons--they really made the shirts pop! Have you seen the tutorial at indietutes for making pants from sleeves? I've got a long sleeved shirt that I want to make a dress for my daughter and pants for my son out of.
It's here: Sleevy pants.

Oh, I love the sleevy pants too! That is so neat!

Kelly, the size dress I made is about an 8. Little Girl is 8 and pretty much wears that size in all clothes.

The one Dana made was about a 2 if I remember correctly.

I made the green one about 4 inches longer than the orange. I did the orange one first and it falls at about the knee and I wanted the other one to be longer.

As far as the size of mens shirt, the orange was a short sleeve XXXL as I wanted to make sure it was long enough, the green was an XXL.

Hope this helps.

Teresa, I might have made my shirt / dress faster but yours looks so much more beautiful :-)
I really need to slow down when making things, LOL!
I need to try your version. The one I made was so much harder with the sleeves. This looks easier, I guess I need to go through the closet again. LOL!
