Lions, Tigers, Cicadas, Oh My!

Here in Nashville, Tennessee, the 13-year cicadas are emerging by the hundreds. We had fun this afternoon collecting the nymph skins (the shells they leave behind when they emerge) and arranging them. This is Little Girl holding some of them…
 Up close and personal…

 13 X 13 = 169 nymph skins…
A live cicada rallying the nymph skin troops, or not…
Don't they look like they are marching?
Do you have cicadas too? Teresa

Thirteen years ago, my beloved Grandmommy passed away (in Murfreesboro). I remember driving from the airport to meet my family at the funeral home and marveling at the deafening sound of cicadas in the trees. It's a good thing I'm not bug phobic, because those suckers were EVERYWHERE! Made the whole trip just that much more surreal.

Thanks for the chuckle (regimented cicada skins - ha!).

A couple of years ago, I think we had the 17 year cicadas or 100 year (can't really remember)... Luckily, we didn't have too many because we don't have the right kind of trees. We did go to an older area/town with older trees and there were just swarms of them everywhere. I thought it was rather cool.

I don't see as many of them as I used to here in south Florida but they do make an appearance. My brother and I used to call them 'ditty mites'. It has stuck in our family so I get some strange looks from people that didn't grow up around my family. They always make me smile.

They are pretty cool, my 2 younger kids are having fun with it. My 12 year old daughter thinks it's "gross."

We do not have cicadas in CA, as far as I know...but I lived in IL when they did their migration thing. Ew! Crunch, crunch.

When we were back packing in Australia on a One Year Working Visa, we woke one morning to the sound of Cicada's but had no idea what it was.

It wasn't until we saw them and the Farmer (we worked on an Orange Orchard in NSW) and he explained what they were... I will never ever forget that sound.

@Knikitta--Yep, it's getting louder by the day!
