365 Days of Trash!

Sara Bayles of Santa Monica, CA has collected over 1,300 pounds of trash from her local beach. She started in March of 2009 and is nearing her goal of 365 beach cleanups. Twenty minutes at a time, Bayles has cleaned her beach and inspired hundreds of other people to do Daily Ocean style cleanups all over the world. Together they have taken over a TON of trash off beaches worldwide.

Maria Calleia a Lonely Planet Producer of the feature “California Adventure” that featured Bayles says, “Sara is extraordinary proof that one person armed with determination and purpose can change the world. A compelling and down-to-earth environmental activist, her work not only changes coastal conditions, it touches hearts and changes minds.”

Sara goes to the same stretch of beach at the end of Ocean Park Blvd. in Santa Monica and gives herself 20 minutes to take photographs of the trash while taking it off the sand. She posts it all at The Daily Ocean blog, which has thousands of followers on Facebook and Twitter. On her blog are links to people’s beach cleanups from all over the world like Italy, Germany, Florida, and North Carolina. Sara averages a twenty-minute beach cleanup every three days since March 2009.

“I started The Daily Ocean so people could come together and get inspired to help the ocean. Almost at the end of my 365 beach cleanup goal feels amazing. But it is just another beginning. I invite anyone who wants to come for the 365th cleanup on Dec. 8th, 2012 to join us. It’s only 20 minutes and I’ve learned you can do a lot in 20 minutes.”

Thanks so much for the many great bags you've gifted me over the years! I really appreciate your generosity and your project. I find too many plastic bags on the beach. A simple switch to a cloth reusable bag like the ones you make will and does make all the difference!

Thanks Sara, it's the little things we all do that can mean so much, either constructive OR destructive!
