In the Wall Street Journal…

A little tidbit in the Wall Street Journal about the real cost of paper grocery bags. See the article online HERE. Teresa

wow! I wish all stores would charge, on a separate transaction- for the bags that are so casually taken for granted. I make sure I thank my customers for either bringing their own bags, or if they only have one or so items- forgoing a bag.

this is interesting. I have heard that at some point we would be paying for paper or plastic bags. I live in Illinois but nothing that I have heard has happened yet. I still see a lot of plastic and paper being used. Thanks for what you do to help us be aware, and using cloth bags. They are the best for shopping of any kind.

I wish the same thing Tami, then we would really see people change their habits.

I have been waiting for that too Lori. I still think it will happen at some point. Of course, some areas do charge, especially in CA. I hope it spreads!

I was wondering if you had seen this! Was just in Arizona, and apparently they haven't gotten the memo. Plastic bags everywhere, and surprise when I took my fabric bag into Walgreens!

Yes! My vocabulary is sufficient for reading this text! No dictionaries needed! I make great strides!

Interesting! I think the price of the bag definitely plays a part in the decision to take their own reusable bag, but I can't help to wonder whether it's not all down to that - or the environment, for that matter. At the end of the day they are charged the same amount whether it's all rung up at once or in two separate transactions. I think those who are aware of the problems posed by disposable bags do not need a separate transaction in order to go reusable, but perhaps the decision in some other cases is just a matter of not wanting to wait any longer more than the actual price of the bags or a feeling of guilt. It may be a good technique - here in the UK you pay for the bag with the shopping, and you still see quite a few people buying bags...

Burovik--Any way you look at it, your English is miles better than my Russian!

NemuriNeko--

I agree with you. The price of bags is factored into the cost of groceries or other items. Therefore, we all pay for bags weather we use them or not. But if the person is faced with what they consider an "additional" cost, they will change their behavior. We hope anyway!

That is so sad about Arizona MissesStitches! I guess we need to send more fabric bags there!

Teresa, did you study Russian in school/varsity?))

Burovik--No, but my younger sister did. :)
