In Search of Organic Bedding

I have posted in the past about my desire the wrap up in organic cotton while I sleep. It may be in my head, but I sleep better knowing that my body is not bombarded with chemicals for the 7-8 (9!) hours I slumber each night.

Recently, a friend of mine asked if I would make her a king sized duvet cover. She found fabric she fell in love with and wanted a cover made. I told her I would try. It couldn't be that hard, right? Turns out, it wasn't! Actually, it was a fairly simple process. I was a bit nervous about cutting into Jenny's expensive fabric without previous duvet constructing experience. So, I asked Harmony if she had some fabric extra fabric (her fabric is 110" wide!!!) so I could make a cover for my own bed first. In true bestie fashion, Harmony sent yardage to me with a birthday card. Fabric for my birthday? Yes please!

I didn't want to mess with buttons, snaps, velcro, or any other kind of closure on the bottom of the duvet cover. In the past, I have had buttons scratch my bed frame, ugh. So, I thought that making one side of the cover about 24" longer than the other and folding it over so the duvet was in a "pocket" at the end would be a better solution. Guess what? It worked perfectly and I could not be happier with the final result. I sewed ribbon ties in each inside corner to keep the duvet from slipping around and getting bunched up.

I love love love love it! I smile each morning when I open my eyes. It's kind of like getting a hug from Harmony each day. :) I made the cover with Harmony's Franklin's Tower fabric. If interested, you can purchase yardage here. I needed about 6.5 yards for a king size cover.
Makes me so happy!
Here is a photo of Jenny's bedroom with her new duvet cover. You can always purchase a solid color organic cotton sheet to be the back of the duvet cover. That's what we did here. Precut, hemmed, easy peasy. OR, you could simply buy TWO sheets of the size you need and sew them together. This would probably be the easiest solution altogether!
Happy sewing + sweet dreams--Teresa
