What is summer without. . .

. . . lightning bugs in a jar? This is little man and little girl in the yard once again finding (torturing) the crawling creatures they happen upon. They caught two "lighting bugs" (according to little man) and promptly named them Sunny and Midnight. Little girl asked if they had a battery in them to light them up. It is a good question. . .

You may wonder why I post so much about my kids and bugs on a site dedicated to eradicating paper and plastic bags. Well, I am a little paranoid about my kids suffering from Nature Deficit Disorder as we live in a large city. I have the book, Last Child in the Woods that I found about a year ago. Ever since I have been encouraging my kids to spend as much time outside as possible. I want them to appreciate and fight for this gorgeous planet. If we don't instill this environmental awareness now. . . ok, enough preaching, have a great day! Teresa

I agree! My little flower spent the morning pulling weeds & watering our poor plants after the heatwave I came home to. We didn't find any worms today - they were probably hiding deeper down in the cool, moist soil. She loves to hold them & watch them squirm around. She saw my coreopsus out front and asked "Is this a daisy mommy?" I told her it was similar & told her its name. I'm big on giving her as much correct information as possible and teaching her about all the different plants. My yard, as you know, has tons of native plants & flowers, which are lovely, green & take a LOT less care than introduced species. Anyway, kids love to be outside & should learn as much about nature as possible.

Your favorite little sister,
