Arkansas Bag!

Hi Teresa! Here is my photo. We're using your bag, along with others (now that you have us thinking about it) at Wal-Mart in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. Tonight was the first time we've actually remembered to carry bags in! Having your bag and knowing we needed to take a photo finally got us to actually do this. You saved the world from at least 10 plastic bags just today! Thank you very much. I don't know how to sew, but I am going to have to try this. I will pass your info along, too, as it really makes people remember!!! The picture's a little grainy, as it was taken with my phone, but we were just so happy!!

Green Bag Lady--Portland, Maine

Teresa... FINALLY.... I got started...

Your bag arrived on Monday (thank you... it's great!) and yesterday I went to town... could not find the fabric I thought I still had but did go buy some inexpensive denim to make some bags... meanwhile... I began with some light weight denim and quilting fabrics... I have made six so far. Your pattern works very well... I do not have a serger so am stitching, then zigzaging the seams... have worked out a pretty quick order of cut, sew, press, etc.

Thanks for getting me started on a fun project...will see where I can find fabric for both of us!

Please note photo of your bag IN MAINE... that's me in the hallway of my apartment building, Portland.

Will keep you posted as I go.
Hope you are starting to enjoy some vacation time..

The Ugly Facts About Plastic Bags

Plastic bags are made of polyethylene
Polyethylene is a petroleum product
Production contributes to air pollution and energy consumption
Four to five trillion plastic bags are manufactured each year
Americans use over 380 billion polyethylene bags per year
Americans throw away approximately 100 billion polyethylene bags per year
Of those 100 trillion plastic bags, 1% are recycled
It takes 1000 years for polyethylene bags to break down
As polyethylene breaks down, toxic substances leach into the soil and enter the food chain
Approximately 1 billion seabirds and mammals die per year by ingesting plastic bags
Plastic bags are often mistaken as food by marine mammals. 100,000 marine mammals die yearly by eating plastic bags.
These animals suffer a painful death, the plastic wraps around their intestines or they choke to death
Plastic bags choke landfills
Plastic bags are carried by the wind into forests, ponds, rivers, and lakes

Shirt Bag

This is Moses Maxen of Greener Nashville (www.greenernashville.org) with a bag that I made out of one of his old shirts. He is in front of the art building here at Belmont University where I teach.

Green Genes

My father is a traveling contractor and does not like to buy a whole lot. He uses cardboard boxes for much of his furniture when he is on the road. He is currently in California. Here is a photo:

Teresa wanted a picture to "prove" I used boxes for furniture. So here you are. I moved my nightstand to the middle of the room for the picture. Note the funky wastebasket. Also the table legs in back, and protective mat. I thought it necessary to show the contents of one drawer of the chest of drawers.
